Bayern Munich’s Mental and Tactical State Before the Union Berlin Match

Bayern Munich warm up

As Bayern Munich approach their next Bundesliga match against Union Berlin, I believe the main story is not the opponent. The real focus is the psychological and tactical state of Bayern themselves after a sequence of unusual performances. What has happened since the Arsenal match has created a different atmosphere around this team and it deserves closer attention.

The shift began even before the Champions League clash with Arsenal. In the league match against Freiburg, Bayern won 6 to 2 but the game revealed something important. They conceded two early goals that were almost identical in structure to the goals they later conceded against Arsenal. The defensive patterns of those moments showed a vulnerability that better teams can read and exploit. The final score was impressive, yet the warning signs were visible.

The loss to Arsenal confirmed that these issues were not isolated. The team looked uncertain in key phases and the goals conceded repeated the same weaknesses that had appeared in the Freiburg match. From that point on, it felt as if Bayern entered a different psychological space. Confidence was shaken and the rhythm that had defined their earlier form shifted noticeably.

This change became even clearer in the following Bundesliga match. Bayern faced St. Pauli, a team positioned near the bottom of the table, and the match was far more difficult than anyone expected. Bayern fell behind, managed to equalise before halftime and then only secured the win with two goals in added time in the second half. Although they collected three points, the performance again highlighted hesitation and a lack of control during long stretches of the game.

These results must also be understood in the context of the Bundesliga. Bayern generally face opponents who sit significantly below them in quality and expectations. Because of this gap, Bayern are expected to dominate these fixtures. When matches become complicated against lower ranked teams, it reinforces the idea that there is something deeper happening inside the squad, something beyond tactics or individual mistakes.

In my view, Bayern’s challenge going into the Union Berlin match is primarily psychological. The team needs to stabilise their mentality, regain clarity in defensive organisation and rediscover the confidence that allowed them to control matches earlier in the season. Union Berlin are a solid and disciplined team, but the real test for Bayern is whether they can overcome the internal doubts that have appeared since the Arsenal defeat.

The recent wins against Freiburg and St. Pauli show that Bayern can still produce results, but the patterns inside those matches show a team that is not yet comfortable. The goals conceded, the late comebacks and the inconsistency in tempo all suggest that Bayern are playing with a mindset that is not fully settled.

As the next match approaches, the performance may tell us more about Bayern’s psychological recovery than about their tactical execution. The quality in the squad is not in question. What matters now is whether the team can reset and perform with confidence again.
