Player number 9 of Como, Anastasios Douvikas, is taking a shot, and standing next to her is Manchester United player number 4, Matthijs de Ligt.

COMO — On a rain-swept night beside the lake, Como 1907 etched their name into UEFA Champions League folklore with an emphatic 4-1 demolition of Manchester United at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. Led by a virtuoso display from playmaker Nico Paz—who struck twice and orchestrated another—Cesc Fàbregas’s side outclassed, outthought, and dismantled the Premier League giants on Matchday 3.

The result marks Como’s most celebrated continental victory in modern history, while leaving Manchester United grappling with fundamental questions after being systematically outplayed in Italy.

Cold Water from the Opening Whistle

Any tactical game plan prepared by United unraveled within ninety seconds. As torrential rain slickened the pitch, Como pounced immediately. Lucas da Cunha slid an incisive delivery across the edge of the box into the path of Nico Paz, who took one touch and drilled a low, left-footed effort into the bottom corner before Senne Lammens could react.

The early blow stunned United into silence. While the visitors held territory in fits and starts, Como controlled the pulse of the half with sharp transitions, suffocating United's midfield double-pivot and denying Bruno Fernandes any space between the lines.

The Second-Half Blitz

Whatever adjustments United intended to mount at the break vanished almost instantly in the second half. In the 49th minute, Paz turned provider, cutting through United’s backline with a laser-guided through ball to Anastasios Douvikas. The Greek international striker held off his marker with authority, firing into the top corner to double the lead.

Less than ten minutes later, the stadium erupted again. Capitalizing on sloppy distribution in United’s defensive third, Paz collected the ball on the right edge of the penalty area, shifted his balance, and curled a low shot inside the near post for his second of the evening. At 3-0, Como were playing with total swagger, slicing through challenges as United's shape completely fractured.

A Ruthless Finish and Late Consolation

The rout reached its peak in the 76th minute. Como substitute Kaiki Bruno drove down the flank and delivered a pinpoint cross into the six-yard box, where Spanish defender Jacobo Ramón rose emphatically to head home the fourth.

United salvaged a 91st-minute consolation when Amad Diallo’s cross found Joshua Zirkzee for a tap-in, but it did nothing to alter the narrative of a historic Italian triumph.

Como manager Cesc Fàbregas hailed his team's identity and bravery:

"We asked the players to play with personality from the very first minute, regardless of the badge on the other side. To score early, control the tempo in difficult conditions, and execute our patterns like that shows the identity we are building. This night belongs to the club, the fans, and every player who worked tirelessly on that pitch."

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick offered a candid assessment of the defeat:

"There are no excuses for that performance. We conceded far too early, lost individual duels across the pitch, and gave a very confident team momentum in their own ground. When you are off the pace at this level, you get punished severely. We have to take accountability and respond."
