Nestled in the Allgäu Alps of southern Bavaria, Unterer Gaisalpsee is a serene mountain lake that captivates hikers and nature lovers alike. Located near the village of Reichenbach (Oberstdorf area), this lake is a perfect destination for a day hike with dramatic scenery, waterfalls, alpine meadows, and tranquil water.
📍 Location & Access
The hike commonly begins from Reichenbach, in the Allgäu region.
Trails are well-marked toward Gaisalp, passing through Reichenbachtobel (a gorge with small waterfalls) before ascending toward the lake.
Some routes require sure-footedness and are more challenging in sections.
⛰️ Distance, Elevation & Duration
Round-trip distance: ~ 8–9.5 km (depending on path)
Elevation gain: ~ 640–670 m
Estimated time: ~ 4 hrs total (about 2 hrs up + 1.5–2 hrs down)
The hike is often rated “medium to difficult” depending on fitness and trail conditions.
🌿 Highlights & Landscape
The route begins through a gorge (Reichenbachtobel) with cascading water and mossy cliffs.
After the gorge section, you pass through lush alpine meadows, with plenty of photo opportunities of wildflowers and panoramic views.
Upon nearing the lake, the trail becomes steeper and rockier, demanding more effort.
The lake itself is a peaceful alpine basin, nestled among rugged peaks — a perfect spot to rest, reflect, or even dip your feet (water is cold!).
✅ Tips for the Hike
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, especially for the steeper/rocky parts.
Start early in the morning to avoid afternoon crowds and give yourself buffer time (weather in mountains can shift).
Bring water, snacks, and possibly a rain shell — mountain weather can change quickly.
Check parking availability in Reichenbach; during peak season it might fill up.
Respect nature — carry out trash, stay on marked trails.
If you have extra energy, one can continue beyond the lake toward summits or ridgelines in the area
