MUNICH – The first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final between FC Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw on Saturday night. In a match filled with intensity, tactical battles, and late-game drama, both teams left the pitch with everything to play for in the return leg.

Early Dominance and Bayern’s Resilience

Barcelona started the match with their trademark composure, taking an early lead in the 8th minute through a clinical finish by Ewa Pajor. Following the goal, the Catalan giants seemed content to manage the tempo, controlling possession while Bayern struggled to find their rhythm. However, as the first half progressed, the German champions began to find their footing, applying late pressure before the break, though they couldn't find the equalizer.

Second Half Surge and Red Card Chaos

The home side came out transformed in the second half. Between the 60th and 75th minutes, Bayern unleashed a wave of pressure that finally paid off. In the 69th minute, Franziska Kett ignited the record-breaking crowd of 31,000 fans with a powerful strike to level the score.

The atmosphere turned fiery in the closing stages. In the 81st minute, goal-scorer Franziska Kett was shown a direct red card for violent conduct (a hair-pulling incident). The tension boiled over to the sidelines, resulting in Bayern’s head coach, José Barcala , also being sent off for his vehement protests. Despite being down to ten players, Bayern’s defense stood firm against Barcelona's late attacks to secure the draw.

This set a new club record for FC Bayern in the UWCL, significantly surpassing the attendance from their previous high-profile matches, including the quarter-final against Manchester United.

Post-Match Quotes: The Managers' View

In the post-match press conference, both managers looked ahead to the deciding leg at Camp Nou:

  • José Barcala (Bayern Munich): "I am incredibly proud of the heart we showed today. Playing against a team like Barcelona requires 100% focus. We managed to frustrate them and found our moment. The red card makes the next game harder, but we've shown we can compete with the best."

  • Pere Romeu (FC Barcelona): "We controlled the first half well, but we missed the chance to kill the game. Bayern is a very physical and disciplined team, especially at home. Now we go back to Barcelona; we have our fans behind us, and we are confident in our ability to reach the final."
