On October 26, 2025, Munich citizens cast their votes in a landmark referendum deciding whether the Bavarian capital should officially bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the coming decades — possibly in 2036, 2040, or 2044.

According to official figures reported by Süddeutsche Zeitung and Welt,

66.4 percent of voters supported the proposal, while 33.6 percent voted against it.

Voter turnout reached around 42 percent, marking one of the highest participation rates in the city’s recent history.

Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, described the outcome as “a historic day for Munich — a vote of confidence in our city’s future.” He emphasized that beyond sport, the Games could drive urban development, international visibility, and community engagement.

The referendum result clears the way for Munich’s city council to present a detailed sustainability and infrastructure concept to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) by mid-2026. The DOSB is expected to select Germany’s official candidate city by autumn 2026, with Munich likely competing against Berlin, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region.

A Divided but Hopeful City

Supporters see the Olympics as a catalyst for investment, tourism, and innovation — particularly in mobility and green infrastructure.

Critics, however, warn about financial risks, housing costs, and environmental impacts, urging city leaders to remain transparent and accountable.

As Welt quoted one opposition spokesperson: “We respect the people’s decision — but Munich must prove it can deliver on its promises.”

For Prime Story Media, whose vision is “telling the most exciting and important part of a story,” this referendum is precisely such a moment — a story that intertwines civic identity, ambition, and the enduring Olympic spirit of Munich.

What Happens Next

  • The DOSB will evaluate proposals from all interested German cities by autumn 2026.

  • If selected, Munich’s official Olympic bid will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the 2036 or 2040 Games.

  • The city must present a comprehensive plan for sustainability, public participation, and infrastructure financing.

  • Local media and citizens are expected to follow each step closely — and Prime Story Media will be there to report every development from Munich.
